Default Collet Closer and 3-Jaw Chuck

    Hi All,

I'm just finishing up the assembly of my new Slant-Pro. I have the new collet closer installed and I've read thru the threads on minimizing vibrations. It's better but I'm still not satisfied. Today I mounted the 3-Jaw chuck to give that a try and the collet closer vibrates like crazy! What is the recommendation here? Do the two work together? Am I supposed to remove the collet closer to use the chucks? (I hope not!).

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Congrats on your Slant Pro!

Unfortunately yes, you should remove the collet closer if using the chuck.

The draw tube will be spinning wildly loose inside the spindle since it's not screwed on to a collet.

Alternative if it fits your work envelope would be 5C 4" chuck...

For what it's worth, I was able to use the collet closer with the chuck.

I needed a work stop inside the chuck so I put 3/4 stock in a collet and it worked perfectly. No vibrations. However I do have the pneumatic DIY auto closer installed.

I can confirm I have done the same.

I haven't installed a chuck on mine yet, but good to know that I can leave the closer installed by putting a blank in a collet first. After all the tweaking, balancing, praying and cussing I have done over the closer, the last thing I want to do is take it off again.

FYI, I was at Tormach last week for their lathe class and asked this very question. Their recommendation is to leave the closer in place with a collet and some blank stock, so long as your work allows. If you need to pass stock through, then of course it has to be removed.
