Thats what I thought. This could also be the difference in chatter between the two machines he has access to.

my tts holders are older so they may have changed, if not changed several times since. without being too technical, i put a calliper next to each and my 1/2" weldon holders are approximately .4" shorter than my er20 holders.

I doubt I have a gib or spindle bearing issue because going to a R8 collet fixes it. I also don't see how a loose gib can cause a squealing chatter because the frequency is too high. Maybe a rumbling chatter?

Anyway, I measured the length of the other ER collets, and they were only 2" long. That extra .5" on McChatterton makes a big difference because the deflection probably increases as the length ^2, or something like that. (I don't think the ER holder itself is bending much, but rather mostly at the TTS/R8 junction.)

If the TTS System is not working for you, you really shouldn't use it - stick to R8's.

Works okay for me. I may have lower standards?

Sir Wilfrid: Be prepared for hysterics and even a fainting spell. Better have smelling salts handy and a nip of brandy.

Christine Vole: I do not think that will be necessary. I never faint because I am not sure that I will fall gracefully and I never use smelling salts because they puff up the eyes. I am Christine Vole.
