Typically expanded sheet is cut in Manual AVHC mode, with the travel speed being a bit slower then usual, and the plasma cutter set into expanded metal cutting mode.

In the expanded metal mode on the plasma cutter, it will maintain a pilot arc when it loses contact with the material, until it senses the material again and then initiate a cutting arc.

Since the torch is going on and off, the AVHC must be set into manual operation to keep a consistent height. This means that the material must remain relatively flat in order for the torch head not to catch the material. This is usually accomplished by either weighting the material near the cut lines, or somehow strapping the material to the slats themselves.
