Best Plasma to use on Torchmate ??

Ok looks like I am going to buy a new Plasma to use of my Torchmate System, what is the best one to use ?

I have height control and will be doing up to 3/4" plate on occasion but mostly lighter stuff around 1/4"

    Advice / Info ?

I have a line on a good Thermal Dynamics 101 Cutmaster, anyone using these ?

I think, by reading the forums, that you can't go wrong with Thermal Dynamics or Hypertherm and they can both be set up for CNC machine use quite easily.
I have a Hypertherm 1250 but I am yet to get it into operation so I can't tell you yay or nay on how good it is.
I am not completely useless.......I can always serve as a BAD example.

We've had a hypertherm 1000 for the past 3-4 years, on our 4x8 TM3. Works great. we cut .03-.50 nicely; anything thicker can be done, but it looks like hell. If you're going to cut up to 1" I'd go with the hypertherm 1650.

Oxy Acc. does not cut as fast but when flame and speed are right you can get amazing cuts with it better than plasma in thicker material above 1/2"

For precise cutting above 1/2" it's hard to beat O/A cutting. Plasma can cut it, but the bevel is noticeable, the dross usually accumulates much easier (still fairly easy to remove), and speeds are about the same in the thicker materials as plasma.

Unless you want to start into the 200 amp cutter range.

    Which plasma cutter to buy

From your "name" I'd assume you're doing 1/8" and less steel. So am I.

My wife bought me a Plasma cutter for my birthday and did a lot of searching at the stores in the Bay Area. It's amazing what they'll share when asked by someone who could be their own buddies' sister.

The consensus was Hypertherm 1000. Plenty of power for faster cutting, capacity for thicker material, consumables are easily found and it fit nicely on top of the welder.

    I love it...and her too!

What switch are you talking about? In the torch or the powersupply?

I have a 1250 myself but have recently gone to a smaller machine. Just fits my needs better. 1250 is for-sale but want to make sure this switch your speaking of is working before a send it away.

    Cheers
    Doug

I believe it would be in the power supply on one of the boards. It senses when the torch has current flowing between the electrode and the work clamp, cutting the material. It switches off the pilot arc (where it arcs to the tip to create an ignition source) because it is no longer needed.

I'm not a Hypertherm Tech by any means, just have a general understanding of the process.
