| ezland, Well, sort of. It's slow and I didn't go very far when I tried it. Also I'm not sure how long the cold rolled steel would hold up. When I made my tap I tapered it in my drill press with a file. Then I cut two grooves in it on my tablesaw with a composition metal cutting blade. I don't think that the geometry of the flutes is perfect and you could do better with some careful Dremel/grinder work. Also you could probably harden it somewhat with heat treatment and a quench. There are some relatively inexpensive acme taps from _Wholesale Tool that would work better or be less work to get it right. Chris |

| punch "case hardening home foundry" into a search engine. I know I have seen it on some HF website but can't remember with one.

| Re: the tapping question: it is tough enough to cut threads in brass with a commercial tap. Brass seems soft up until you try to cut it with a dull tool, then for some reason it seems as hard as glass ![]() Splurge and buy yourself a real acme tap. Wear it on a chain around your neck and thank your wife for the necklace You should have seen the look on my wife's face when I gave her a necklace of used up CBN inserts. I thought, "heck these are just as hard as diamond" and I hate to throw them away. But, I never even got to first base, thankless woman!
