I am looking into purchasing a used surface grinder that will mainly be used for squaring up blocks and getting them down to a specific dimension (for tool and die work). Right now we use a manual surface grinder for this purpose and we are looking to upgrade.

I am interested in the type of surface grinder that has automatic x y and automatic downfeed as well. For example, the Chevalier FSG series or the Okamoto ACC-1224 series. The thing I can't figure out by reading online is how do I set how much total material to remove?

For example, let's say the workpiece is roughly 2.3" thick and I want to bring it down to 2.250" - can these machines be told to remove x" or to stop after making x passes or to stop when x" from the bed? Or do they not work that way - and an operator must be standing there to stop and measure frequently?

Thanks in advance.
