Mounting a non Techno supplied spindle to a LC4848

I might be buying an HSD AT/MT1073 spindle and Yaskawa V7-4X from ShopBot and making my own mounting bracket for the spindle.

Has anyone mounted a non Techno supplied spindle and gotten the speed control to work under software control?

    Any suggestions?

You will need to get a riser card from Techno to be able to use the analog voltage output to control spindle speed. The VFD will have to be programmed to accept a ~0.5-4.5V analog voltage.

I've often thought about controling the spindle from the g code interface but then I remind myself I would have to pause the machine each time I would like to adjust the speed of the spindle. For me that would irritate me to no end. (Walking away cursing Techno for thier crappy interface that I am forced to use.....)

edit: I use the built in relay to turn the VFD on and off and the speed is controlled through the dial on it's front. I just disconnected the router power cables from the relay and ran low voltage lines to the inputs in the face of the VFD.

What are you talking about? Spindle speed can be controlled directly from gcode through the techno interface. "M3 S18000"

If you wanted to manually change the spindle speed while a program is running you would have to pause the program change the speed and then start the program again. That is a pain in the butt. All I do is turn a dial.

No you don't, spindle speed will automatically change if "programmed speeds" is selected and the spindle speeds are programmed into the GCODE. You will have to setup the analog output of course. Look under setup>advanced>spindle control.

Of course you can program it into the g-code itself! I was talking about cases where you made a mistake in programing or feel that you could slow down or speed up the spindle to produce the optimum results and see the result in real time. I like having that flexibility built in to my setup.

On my ShopBot, I can change the spindle speed by pushing the UP or DOWN button the VFD control and the control software does not stop or even know I pushed a button.

I program speeds all the time and want to be able to do so with this LC4896.

Does anyone have a picture of this riser card? I have the PCI card that plugs into the computer, but there is no extra connectors on it. Do I need a second PCI card to plug into the computer next to the interface card?

Do I use the connector on the control board, mounted to the machine to turn on and off the spindle? Is there a set of dry contacts there for that?

The riser card is just an expansion board that plugs into the 50 pin connector on the main control board, it has a D/A converter on it and a set of relay contacts for coolant. Dry contacts for spindle output can be found on the main board's DB9 connector.

    What is a "dry" contact?

Just a set of relay contacts with no voltage present.

Ohhhh.... Thanks for the explanation! I should probably be using that for the on/off of my vfd instead of conecting to the unused mechanical relay.
