New Taig owner (almost) Thread Cutting?

Well my new Taig cnc is on order and while I am waiting I was reading through the Mach3 plugins for the Mill Manual. I noticed there is a little deal for cutting threads. That would be very neat for me to do on the mill. I had thought about doing it on my lathe but the piece I have in mind is really not very lathe friendly...so I was looking at tapping but doing it all on the mill would be too cool

Anyway it looks easy but it probably isn't, but I have been looking around for the thread cutting tool (something like the manual shows) but so far no luck at the usual places.

Anyone ever try this....how hard is it? Where can I find the tool needed?

    Thanks
    Darren

Google 'thread mill' and you will find lots of information. Also do a search on CNCzone for thread milling.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

thread milling is great for large threads, something like 1", where a tap is quite expensive

    Hi Darren,

Yep sure, it's easy. Have a play - cut some air and check carefully before you commit to the cut though, they're easy to break in the smaller sizes!

I got that cutter on Ebay. The seller's no longer registered, unfortunately. Finding a single point cutter's a lot harder than actually cutting a thread! Plenty of multi point ones about, but then you need a tool for every thread pitch. Maritool does a nice line in decent tools at decent prices, but no single point. I might email him and ask what's the chance of him doing a single point tool: http://www.maritool.com/Cutting-Tool...135/index.html

Please let us know if you find a supplier for the single point tools

    Regards,

    Jason
