    Question Taig Modification

I have been thinking about the Taig the the last week. I finally feel like the Mill is where it should be. I finally equipped it with the New Gecko 540 and am moving quickly. It's great!

I however was thinking about Beefing it up a bit without making it look Frankenstein-like, even though it is a machine, I still like having everything I have look good. One thing is saw over in the IH forums to add mass and rigidness. Was fill the base and part of the column with an epoxy granite. The Taig column is fully open, filling that entire cavity would add mass and strengthen it, especially if an added material was used. It's not that much more mass but could help. I am still "bothered" by the way the column is mounted, I just feel like I can do better while adding strength.

Does anyone have any information, have people done it?

There was a lengthy thread either here or in the mechanical design forum about column reinforcing - I think the thread was based on the X3 but the principal would still be the same regardless of machine. I think the consensus reached was steel rod with epoxy for the column gave the most straight line deflection improvements but as for rotational deflection (that is twisting or torquing the column) improvements the column to base mounting was the weak point. As for the base there were improvements, but not really quantifiable from filling the base with epoxy granite to help deaden high frequency vibration. Quality of cut was the only measure of improvement on the base which is a rather subjective viewpoint.

I believe Bob Warfield is/was doing the same to his IH machine(s).
