Weight box for TAIG CNC Mill

    Folks,

Just wanted to share my ~55lb weight box I just added to my TAIG mill. I'm definitely pleased with the amount of vibration it soaks up. I've used it for a few hours now and I can tell how much less the mill vibrates at higher RPM and taking passes in aluminum.

    Enjoy!

    weight box

Never heard of one. Does it just add mass to the bench or is it bolted throught the same holes as the mill and that helps somehow?

Youve seen my mounting plate with supports. The bas plate has rubber pads at all the bolt areas that dampen vibration into the bench.

Its purpose is to add mass to the mill/bench and it is bolted, through the bench, to the TAIG base.

You had the granite-block, right? Just curious - how much does it weigh?

No, Mine is the one where I just added the blower, height gage riser block and 4th axis upgrades. I believe you were involved in the thread.

Take a look at the thread. The base and supports are all one unit. The mill is then bolted to the base so that they are connected as one independant unit. For the most part I think it could functoin on its own without being bolted down to the bench. The base is made 95% of 1" thick Aluminum except the small buttresses(1/2" if I recall). Not sure of the actual added weight though.

The whole thing is then bolted to the bench through the base plate and has 1/4" rubber feet at those bolt down points.

This way the mill itself has added mass and rigidity and due to the the rubber feet is somewhat dampened from creating vibrations into the bench.

He does have a nice setup I agree. If you have seem his blog.....

His tool height gage was actually the inspiration for me getting mine.

I like the enclosure. I am a bit jealous of that. I spent 0$ on mine made from salvaged wood, plexi and some 8020 from work etc. It gets the job done for the most part. Some lighter particals can blow out but he cost was right.
With that said if I had the cash I am jealouse of his ver nice.

The Cam is MeshCam (I love it, download for free and it's like having a real solid program) no more then .8 mm deep with a feed of only 6ipm because I can't get my controllers too go faster. RPM at 10,500

I could cut the time in in like 3 times.

    MeshCAM

Speed looks like a good start.

Are they pocketed? I have MeshCAM and this my sound stupid but was unaware that it could do 2D-2.5D contouring and pocketing. I thought it was just 3D (raster) comtouring.

I will have to take a better look at the software.

    Thanks

    Pocketing vs rasted 3D

Looking closer I can see where raster toolpaths start and end

You might want to look into a program that does 2.5 D contouring and pocketing as well for that sort of work. You will find is much more efficient, faster and cleaner for those sort of cuts

I use DeskCNC personally and have found it fairly easy to use and reasonable priced but I know there are others out there and some cheaper.
