I don't know what's causing it, but you might get some clues by monitoring the Windows task manager to see which process is consuming all of those cpu cycles.
I have a problem. I am running a taig mill with mach3 cam and gecko g540 controller. I just got the g540 wired up in a box and got the xml file pasted in the mach3 folder to properly set it up for mach3. I am running it on a pc with windows 7.
What is happening is when I close mach3 the cpu usage jumps up to 90-100% and the computer basically is useless. If I reboot the pc it will run no problem no issue. I can then load and run mach3 no problem. But then when I close mach3, it always makes the cpu usage jump to about 100% and it wont stop till i manually reboot (with the hard reset button).
Any ideas?

Sounds like the driver is not shutting down.
Try running Drivertest.exe in the Mach3 folder after closing Mach3.

I tried doing that but what happens is that the cpu spikes so hard that once it hits 90% or so, the task manager doesn't update enough and it doesn't show what component is hogging the cpu. It just gets so the mouse moves very jerky every few seconds or so and the task manager data stops updating for 10 to 20 sec at a time.
Its a dual core and I know I have run mach3 on a lesser machine without that happening. Also, it doesn't happen when the machine is running mach3, only when it closes. I have tried powering off the g540 box during that time to see if it had an effect but nothing changes and the pc remains cpu locked.
system is dual core athalon 64 x2 dual core 3600+ cpu running at 1.9 ghz
32 bit operating system
2 gig ram
no other software running in the background
I just ran the driver test. It opened a window that looked like it was testing pulse rates or something. The window then closed on its own giving me no data and the computer did the same thing at that point as when I close mach3 - meaning it was sluggish and cpu load locked.
so - running the test resulted in the same effect as running mach3 and closing it
it looks to me something in the task manager resource monitor section called 'deferred procedure calls and interrupt service routines' is what is eating up the majority of what I can find
any ideas?
Try going into the bios and disable C1E or EIST, if you have them. There should only be one or the other

I have Mach3 on this PC, which is an X2 4200 with XP Pro and have never seen the issue you're seeing.

Could be a virus , Google combofix, download and run it
I am already running avast full time, with malwarebytes + spybot S&D + hijackthis + tdsskiller on demand.
If a bug gets through that battery I plan on just throwing the computer away and declaring the virus 'winner'.
then again, it does have this odd, recurring problem
:P
a rootkit could get threw there no problem
but now I'm guessing all this " running avast full time, with malwarebytes + spybot S&D + hijackthis + tdsskiller on demand " is hogging the system resources
