too small or too big?

allo im new here. still manual so i sorta dont belong. im getting there!

Taig mills. very nice little toy, even if mine has made me cry a little...

yeah, plastic gears... so who got brass/steel gears made for a sum unrevealable?

otherwise, it still takes my reclaimed 50mm cutter ... im nasty and cut steeel.

where was i? oh! too big!

normally, after setting up...you find you forgot to put the cutter in... oops. you then find the mills too small to get it in... or the drill you have is just too long...

BUT! TODAY WAS DIFFERENT!

went to face a 20 mm block of ally on the table and the cutter doesnt reach! my little taig is too big now!

Ha ha... that is always fun when you cannot get the drill bit in after you've got everything ready to go

Have you taken advantage of the adjustability of the headstock and dovetail? You can loosen and readjust the headstock so that it is as low or high as possible on the dovetail. And when that fails... the dovetail itself can be removed and repositioned to a lower or higher place (note: you will want to re-tram after). Good luck! -Keith

ok, long time stewing on a reply

um, i just pulled it apart and reassembled with some lovely ballscrews courtesy cncfusion...

and duly noted down what you had pointed out... (not that i did anything about it... youll see why)

firstly...the screws long enough to almost get the spindle onto the table now...just the "counterspring" is stopping it so now im back to just being too small again

but, on the same track...ive often thought of maybe a packer piece under the Z axis to raise it somewhat...

ill have to measure this screw properly and think a bit...

I'm getting the feeling you may be mistaken on what machine you have and that you do not have a Taig by the statement you mentioned:
