Levisutton,
If you cut steel it will be loud, although some what quieter than a geared head mill.

Jeff...
I am wondering how loud a taig CNC mill is? I would like to use one in my apartment and I am just wondering if they are loud enough that it could be a problem with the neighbors?
Since the Taig is belt-driven I am hoping it is a little quieter than the smithy geared mill that I have used in the past.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
Hi, my taig is quiet enough to talk over (normal level) while its cutting alu. I have it in an enclosure so when i close the doors its even quieter. Compaired to a shop vac or vacuum, its quiet

It all depends on what you are cutting and how thin your apartment's walls are :-). The mill itself just makes a low hum from the spindle motor and a fairly quiet whirring from the stepper motors--all of the loud noise will be from the tool contacting the workpiece. So for cutting wood or plastic, it's much quieter than a router or handheld drill. For metal, especially steel, it can get loud, but it'll only really "scream" if you're trying to cut too fast :-). An enclosure will also help cut the high-frequency noise.
As a point of comparison, I run mine in a garage. You can't hear it outside the garage unless I'm cutting metal, and even that is much quieter than my neighbors running their lawnmowers, power tools on the weekend, etc.
Thanks for the replies. That is just the information I was looking for.
Sincerely,
Levisutton
When I build mine I have an idea for an enclosure where each wall will be two sheets of aluminum with dynamat (Or a cheap alternative) sandwiched in between. My buddy who is a DJ used it in his basement and it REALLY cut down the sound. If I ever build it I will post the details.
