    X axis extension?

I saw an old thread about a super long X-axis. Have there been any updates on this?

I'm trying to get a CNC'd Taig 2019CR mill going. Y and Z are moving but X doesn't want to play. I'd be more willing to put money and more time into this whole project (despite not actually owning the machine) if it had a longer X axis. That's the only really disappointing thing about the mill from my perspective. Let's not mention the controller right now. Ultimately it should be replaced.

I do inlay work on guitars. The owner is a guitar builder. 12" is wide enough only for some of the things I might do. 20" would help. 26" would probably cover even some of the oddball things.

I want to be able to at least rout a set of fretmarkers. I'd love to rout an inlay pattern that spans the length of the board. Heck I'd like to mill my own compound radius fretboards and cut fret slots too. This would be a great help to me.

This probably won't help much in your particular case but it may help others wanting just a few more inches on the X.

Quick & easy: take off the Y saddle and put it back on the other way around. This will give you an extra 3-4 inches of X travel because the lead nut is off center and having it on the other side will allow the spindle to be all the way above the end of the table.

Thanks guys. I read something a while back that sounded like one of the dealers was going to offer it. I read all about Marty's amazing work already.

Well I finally found where I saw it. A2Z's catalog from '09: "Taig Mill extended travel X table. 19+ inches of travel." I just sent them an e-mail and I'll see what they say. I suspect they never made them or I'd see evidence of them on their website (other than the PDF).

    Thanks again,

A2Z CNC Extended Travel X table this summer!

Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about!!!

Once I got the right e-mail form, Tim Goldstein got back to me really fast. It's still under development. It's been delayed a bit due to having to move shop. They're hoping for a mid-summer release if all goes well.

Here's what the old PDF catalog says:

26" long, 19+ inches of travel
104 - 10-32 tapped tooling plate type holes
Fits Taig 2018, 2019 or CNC mill
    Hard anodized and Teflon coated
    Includes extended lead screw
    $330.

I'm psyched. This will be perfect for fretboards. I need 19" to radius a full board and this thing will have a total max of about 19.5". Just enough breathing room. And most actual inlays will be much smaller.

No, not yet. I have a reminder set to bug them again in July to see how things are going.
