Default Advice Needed: DC Motor Pulleys and Belt

What are other people using when they convert the Taig mill to a variable speed DC motor? I don't want stepped pulleys, just a single ratio, probably 1:1.5 step-up for a somewhat higher spindle speed. Is a 1/4" flat belt suitable for this? I don't have the capability to make cogged pulleys. The motor shaft is 17mm (about 0.669" D X 1" long). Any ideas or advice appreciated!

I use a Sherline 90VDC with a KBIC controller which varies the speed from about 300 RPM to 10K. I got both as a set including a Taig headstoc with ER16. Check on Sherline site for the motor and KBIC
