Default Taig lathe cross slide wheel

    Howdy,

    Newbie taig lathe owner here.

When I turn the cross slide wheel there is some free movement before the cross slide moves.

    Is this normal?

Seems like it would be hard to know how far I have moved the cross slide based of the markings like this?

    Thank you!

That's called backlash; it's normal. Just start counting from the point where the screw engages. As long as you keep going in the same direction, it won't accumulate.
