Your knob on the front panel gives a DC voiltage for the motor control. When in CNC this comes from the PWM. You may have noticed if the konob is at minimum or maximum the speed may not be as expected. The same applies to the PWM. Set PWM for maximum of 3500 RPM. Using M3 Sxxx for speed don't go below about 200-300 or above 3300. You will soon find the limits. It goes ratty. The AD conversion in the X4 has a range problem in firmware. It could be fixed with a small resistor at either end of the POT (front panel).

Hi Neil, Can you give more details on how to fix the spindle speed control problem on the X4? (It sounds like you've been through the exercise). We get some erratic spindle speed adjustment when driving it through Mach3. When using the manual control on the spindle, it is perfect. Thanks!

Neil, Nigel and I are about to receive our X4 from Hans. Knowing your doing a lot with him, especially the control circuitry on the new unit, what are the things we can modify to enhance the X4, such as the resistor setup your just mentioned. Also, when can you come over and perform the mods with us? /Michael

about the spindle control with mach3 of x4,at first find the motor control/spindle setup/ports&pins/config. choose spindle motor output,PWM control, and set base pwm freq.to 1200,set minimum pwm to 0%. after seting that ,the spindle will work in cnc mode

If base PWM frequency is too low then the filtering of it becomes 'lumpy' and makes for erratic speed reference I believe.
