Add a Hinge to your Electronics Enclosure on your Syil X3 CNC Mill

Hi All,

I have had to access the electronics inside the enclosure on the rear of my cnc mill on numerous occasions. This generally meant supporting the electronics enclosure with twine whilst work was carried out inside the enclosure.

Recently I had a young bloke helping me and I asked him to hold the enclosure whilst I tied it up with twine.

He said to me " You silly old bastard, why don't you fit a hinge?" I had to admit that my method was indeed silly.

I had in my possession an old brass piano hinge that was a perfect length for the task.

Yes the hinge does seem like a simple but much more effective way to attach the rear panel. I have not had many occasions to take mine off but today the Z axis stopped moveing when I was lubing the ways. Does not sound like the stepper is powering when I try to jog it so I guess I will be removing the rear panel or more sometime today or tomorrow. Do you by any chance know if there are any breakers or fuses for the Z stepper motor that could cause it to do this? Perhaps I will implement a hinge when I get the Z axis fixed.

If X and Y are moving, then the 48Volt DC Power Supply is OK.

Check the "bootlace" ferrules fitted to the ends of the wires enetering the green plugs to the Z Axis driver module. At the same time check the X, Y and 4th axis plugs (if fitted). These were not crimped properly in the factory and can come out fairly easily. A gentle pull on each wire in turn will reveal any suspect crimping.

I got rid of the bootlace ferrules on mine and opted for tinning each wire with solder.

There is nothing wrong with bootlace ferrules, I think that they are a great idea if fitted properly with the correct tooling.

I did the same with mine. Makes access a lot simpler.

I hinged mine in a similar manner, and added a soft rubber dust flap at the top to stop shavings attacking th power supply.
Was a good opportunity to add a power plug for the pump, the light and the 4th axis.

My mill is in a corner of my spare room and yes I cable tie the case open, reaching it by crawling on my hands and knees under the rhs of my table and 3d arm. On arrival I usualy find i've left the cable ties behind - So I'm going to follow your lead as well and fit a hinge.
