Help on Syil cleaning & setup

Hi,
I am a newbie that purchased a Syil Super X3 mill in March 07 from the Australian distributor but because of illness, I had to keep it in the shipping crate until now.
My question is about the packing grease on the machine. what is the best method of removing it and would the time in storage have caused any problems?
It all looks ok but I have not started the cleaning & setup so any help would be appreciated.
While the manual is useful, I was banking on the importer here in Aus for support if needed but then I receive an email saying he's no longer wanting to deal with Syil China and any issues should be directed back to them.....so I thought I would post on this site for some help.
Again, any advice on what to do regards cleaning/setup would be appreciated.

Cheers

Coilwinder

Break cleaner works really good on removing that nasty grease. I've heard kerosene is good too. No matter which you use, do so in a well ventilated area away from flames!!!

Also, make sure to re-protect the mill with either wax made for protecting machines, or a light oil like WD40 or something.

Hi Coilwinder

The good news is that Frans from Syil Australia has sorted out problems he was having with Syil China and is now back up and running. I'm sure he would be able to assist you with any questions.

I have used Parafin to clean my SX3, Arceurotrade have a good strip down guide for a X3 in pdf format (arceurotrade.co.uk) this may help.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
wwendorf , thanks , I'll try the kerosene & WD40

john_t_h, It is also good to know that Frans is good to go again as he was a great help when I was deciding on which mill to go with.

rogerx3,I will try that strip down guide that you mention

I'm an electronics engineer with good 3D CAD skills but very little cnc practical work so I have a learning curve ahead of me. I design metal detectors and want to use the mill for making search coil housing molds, control box parts etc.

Looks like a very helpful forum and hopefully in time, I can contribute something in the future.

cheers & thanks for the help guys.

Hi coilwinder,

One important thing, if you use brake cleaner (or kerosene), wear some good rubber gloves, and goggles (or wraparound safetly glasses). I'm positively freaky about safety and not getting to close to chemicals and brake cleaner is just plain nasty!

It would also be interesting to see some of the metal detectors you've created. Pics would be really awesome!

Cool Yea! It does.

Yea! It does. Just tried it on mine. Use a citrus cleaner.

Why are you spraying brake cleaner on the painted parts??? The grease on mine was only on the bare metal ways. I also sprayed it onto a rag, then wiped the grease off with the rag. I never applied the brake cleaner by directly spraying it on the machine.

I didn't want my paint to come off. I did try citrus cleaner and it took forever to get the grease off, along with a lot of scrubbing. With the brake cleaner it came right off.

I used technical alcohol.
Worked lik a dream, but it too was a bit hard on the paint, so dont rub there.

I didn't mean to imply you were stupid or anything of the sort. I just was wondering why the worry about the paint coming off if you were only cleaning the bare metal parts of that nasty red grease?

I was also just relaying what I used that worked well for me.
