How concentric is the normal holes that you have interpolated? I havent tried on my x3 but I do know that you will get some funny results if the holes are at all eggy. It’s not that hard, it is simply a helical move. Just as another note you can thread mill with a tap if the pitch is correct and you grind all but one flute off.

I have some broken taps that I'm going to grind down and experiment with but I think there will be some issues w/ clearance on internal threads. If you grind down a 1/4-20 tap I don't think that you can thread mill an internal 1/4-20 thread because the one remaining cutting edge still spins in the original diameter. The only internal thread you could cut is 1/2-20.

I was going to try some external threads first on a small boss but I need to get my circles more concentric before I'm anywhere close to attempting that.

Iv'e just ordered a thread mill and a single point threading cutter from ebay, searched using taig.. milling cutter word combination. These are hard to find / understand what thread angle they offer. In the description they are quoted as being 60 degree, good enought for me. This having been said, The mach3 threading wiz is giving me trouble and my newly arrived mill has the y axis prob, I realy must do one thing at a time but time is all to short. I dont think I'm making sense.

Just arrived 3/8 four flute single point thread milling cutter. I'm going to thread mill some plastic as my first cut on my sx3. This cutter has a 60 degree cutting angle as I am a metric man. will Post the results, good or bad.

Thumbs up Syil first cut Thread

Hello all Legion99999 in particular
just compleated my first cut - climb milled a bit of plastic with a taig four flute single point thread mill as shown in NFS wizard thread milling screen as in the video. The cut went well but my feed speed was very slow (still much to learn). But I've learnt a lot - it was a bit tense as I had my hand hovering over the estop switch, I set my rapids 5mm over the fixture and had never just gone for it before. All in all I am impresed with the Syil super x3 as to wards the end I mesured the spindle speed 1465 via mach3 1500 and the sx3 digital readout read 1522 ish a bit of fluctuation but then its as it came. Next time I will cut some thing harder and with the right speed and feed.
Tool - covered. Method - Used NFS Thread Milling Wizard, X,Y coords 0,0 Tool No 4..., Climb mill (rapids to bottom of cut ooh scary) cuts up wards. Pitch 1.5mm (with this kind of cutter I can cut a thread any thing from 0.5 to 2.5mm pitch). The NFS Wizard is quite straight forward - though make sure the tool path looks right after you have set your soft limits. Oh and check tool height. all done I'm off to my day job!.
hope this helps.
Ps I am a true novice and could not have done this without reading posts and veiwing MACH3 training vidieos over and over again.
Roger

Not sure about this (an AR-15 reciever is a rifle part Me thinks) as height may be a problem as possibly about 100 - 150mm possibly. because I dont have all my draw bars yet I used my drilling chuck, however if you used a collet and an angle plate fixture you may just have enought room. I may be talking rubbish because over here we are not allowed such things. How ever as far as thread milling goes as long as you can hold an object rigid enought and are able to home your tool acurately should be no problem.

Yes mine came via Ebay as well as you know i've bought a taig carbide 3/8 4 flute single point and also a mulit point five flute that will cut about 10 turns in just over one pass power permitting, yet to be tested. The single point one is most entertaining at the moment.
