High speed spindle & correct RPM ?

Just fitted my new board and hoped to use the opportunity to set this jumper to show the correct speed after fitting , the board is marked rev 1.3 and is definately showing the slower speed.

Anyone know which jumper or how to get an accurate speed reading?

You could use an optical tachometer- you stick a piece of reflective material (usualy supplied) on to the spindle and press a button- it gives you the direct RPM.

Also, you could use a stroboscope- make sure you get the spindle "stationary" with the lowest frequency- it will seem stationary at multiples (or harmoics) of the lowest stationary speed.

Ie- if it appears stationary at 1000 herts, it will also seem stationary at 2000 and 3000 etc.

Watch out for strobes- frequencies around 7 herts and multiples thereof can cause epiletic fits.

The later digital boards do not have the jumper. When using the high speed gears in the machine, everything at the spindle will be 2X what is on the head display, but your RPM on the controller will be correct assuming you have your parameters set correctly.

Richard,

I have the new board on my machine as it does not have a jumper but Mach3 does not show the correct rpm. What are the settings? Bearing in mind I have my machine set up for metric operation, quite a few of the settings were out - not a problem with most of them but not yet figured how to do the spindle. Any help would be very useful.

I can live with the front panel only showing half speed but the software definitely needs setting up properly. I hope this will help you too, Babba.

Mike

Me too I thought that I was being stupid, tacho in hand looking for the adjustment pots. I realy thought that my mince pies were playing up Will look into the jumpers that you are talking about, I'm going to lay down now all this is making me a bit grumpy.. maybe tomorrow things will be different.

Talking spindle no adjustment required.!

Stored out spindle speed adjustment, it is quite accurate more over I believe mach3 and my tacho - it's good enough. So no adjustment needed.

Syil S3 CNC Mill Spindle Speed Calibration Procedure

Hi All Syil X3 Mill Users,

At the link below you will find the procedure that I used to calibrate the spindle speed of my Syil converted X3 Mill. The procedure calibrates the speed requested by Mach3 to the actual speed of the machine.

This procedure works on the first generation of Syil Mill Spindle Control Boards. The "new" generation of Spindle Control Board does not have any speed adjustment potentiometers so appears not to be capable of calibration by this method. I suspect that the only way to calibrate the spindle speed is in firmware inside the Atmel PIC fitted to the new board. If you have one of these boards, all I can suggest is that the factroy settings are close enough.

I was always annoyed that I could never attain the maximum 3400 rpm under Mach3 control. The low end wasn't too bad as delivered but the top end was miles out.

I have now adjusted my machine following this procedure and I am now happy. Of course the calibration is for speed settings with no overrides.

Hope this helps for those who like myself wondered how to do this for 12 months.

I was lucky that my machine front panel speed display was quite accurate when checked with my laser optical tacho so I did not need to adjust this. If any one knows how to calibrate the front panel rpm readout, please let me know and I will amend the procedure below so others can benefit.

Kind Regards

Chrisjh
