Buzzing from the back

Just before wrapping up for the day & just before starting its last cycle my SX3 has failed. I have no XYZ travel but I seem to be able to start the spindle and there is a buzzing noise coming from the rear electronics. No bang, no flash & no smoke.

As access to the rear of the machine is pretty tight, does anyone have any idea of what I should start looking at ?

I'm told its the spindle control board, there's a relay fitted which seems to prefer a 110v supply against the 240v in UK.

New board in the post & I'm going to feed the power through a 110v transformer.

So you're going to power the mill completely by 110VAC or just that particular control board? If there is a known issue with the relay, has the distributor or manufacturer made mention of a proper solution to the problem?

I ask as I am close to making a decision as to which mill I order and even though I do have a very beefy 110VAC transformer, I'd rather not run it from that, especially if the unit is supposed to be 240VAC compliant.

I'm going to power it completely, its a 110/240v machine and I'm told it only suffers a slight decrease in spindle speed ramping when run on 110v. It can be altered to have the particular board/component to run on 110v but I'd rather not go there, elektirikery not being my strongest point.

Syil are apparently working on a permanent fix, take that to mean what you want but so far I've not come across anyone who has unresolved issues with Syils support.

If you are considering an X3, I bought one at the beginning of a very steep learning curve involving several projects, its my style to research VERY carefully before spending money & diving in and with my budget it was a choice between an X3 + CNC kit, a Syil X3 or a Tormach (at the very top of the budget). I opted for the Syil as I have no ambitions to fit my own CNC and the £2-3k I saved over the Tormach is busy earning the money that puts me a few steps closer to the Haas I want up & running inside 2 yrs.

I bought it against the advice of several 'seasoned' engineers & machinists, All but one have swallowed their words after seeing it up & running, making chips and more importantly EARNING £££MONEY. Although by far the most impressive part of it and the one which draws most curiosity is Mach3, they cannot believe something so capable can cost so little.

Thanks for the reply Babba. I've looked at the various options and for the money I can't see a huge saving in doing the conversion myself. Glad to hear you're getting the results out of it that you wanted, it gives me hope I can do the same.

Obviously if they are working on a fix then it must be their fault your machine has gone down.

Once they have the fix are you getting an upgrade free of charge?

Good luck,
John

hi John,
As mentioned, we are working on fixing the problem with the circuit boards. Sieg don't seem to be in a hurry to sort it out. We've more or less pin-pointed the relay on the spindle board as being the problem after having spoken to experts - and it may mean replacing the component on the board and testing out. Assuming that works then we can get all the exisiting customers boards replaced.

Running on 110v transformers is a temporary measure that came about after discussing the matter with a customer who suffered the problem - the machine then runs fine, and indeed, the same with another customer.
Syil UK paid for the transformer and will carry out any upgrade free of charge, without question.

John, how's the XJ20 conversion going? - I haven't had a chance to check out your thread - I got up to about 10 pages and suffered overload!!

Hi Hugh,

Might still have an interest in the X3 myself so any updates when available will be appreciated.

As for the XJ20, still waiting for imported ball screws but everything else is sorted. I may be in the market for a XJ25 instead of the X3 shortly (imho better than a X3 with higher specifications but needs CNCing).

Hope your fit and well again,
John
