Precision Quick change collet Set

Has anyone tried the Precision Quick Change Collet Set from SyilAmerica? I am probably going to order one when I order my mill and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them. How is their runout?

There aren't any details on their website but the collets looked like they wen't up to a fairly large size so I checked with Richard and was suprised to find out that they are ER16. I haven't seen an ER16 collet over 3/8 for sale anywhere but he says that that it ships with a 1/8 - 1/2 collets.

Any thoughts about this collet chuck vs R8 collets?

I have not used the R8, but we started using ER collets a few years ago and i have no complaints.

There is no way the ER16s we have can hold a 1/2". They are not big enough.

The picture they have on the website shows "single angle" or maybe "TG" type collets, definately not ER16.
KBC tools has R8 shank to ER-32 sets for $400.

When I first asked Richard what size they were I was thinking ER24 or ER32. I was so surprised with the response of ER16 that I immediately asked for confirmation and what collets it came with. The response was: The ER16 max size is ½”. They come with the 6 most common sizes 1/8”, ¼”, 3/8”, 5/16”, 7/16”, ½”.

I wouldn't be able to tell one collet from another, just wanted to know if anyone else had thoughts on the subject.

If this is for a CNC machine, I would go for the Tormach system.... You get Z repeatability, and you can use 3/4" tooling like electronic edge finders, fly cutters, drill chucks, and other 3/4" shaft tooling without an adapter.

"TG" type collets

I just got a set with my new machine a week ago. Even though it was not the same as the picture, it was fine. I believe the collet range is from 1/8 to 5/8 but I will have to double check on that. As for the collet style it was like a TG but, I am not for sure if it is a direct knock off or not. I'm my opinion, it was a good deal for the price. If you have to have a ER style collet, look on
Ebay there is a guy that has some seemingly reasonable deals on collet sets and a R8 tool holder. One other note I have ran a lot TG and ER in the past and in my opinion they are both way more than ample for the X3, but I would suggest staying away from the double angle collets unless you are using them for drilling.

ER 16 collets are ONLY available up to 3/8 collet size. ER 20 goes up to 1/2".

Even if they are ER 16 size and somehow custom made to fit half inch (unlikely), you couldn't consider them "true" ER 16 because the are not inline with recognized ER tooling standards.

Reference this chart

don’t get me wrong I am totally happy with the collet set but unfortunately they are not ER.

reference this chart
http://www.desktopcnc.com/useful/collet_info.htm

Though they are about the length on an ER 40 check your major diameter. An ER40 is 41mm where as the syil set is about 20mm something. Like i said before there is nothing wrong with them just don’t go buy more collets thinking an ER40 will work.

Thanks for posting the pics Legion99999

Ya those aren't ER.
ERs are double split and have a steeper angle.
