Auto thumbnail for picture in post.

I have noticed that IJ has come up with a good idea in this thread.
More bolts than the Sydney harbour bridge.

He is posting pictures as thumbnails and putting links on them for the option to see enlarged versions.

I was thinking that this could be implemented as a standard feature to all threads. The user would post any sized picture and it would be auto thumbnailed to be displayed in the thread. The picture would also be stored as its original size with a link from the thumbnail.

I know this can already be done using code, but if it was automatic and happened to every picture it would save a heap of bandwidth.

I know you already have the auto thumbnail scripts because you use them in the photo gallery.

Because of the saving in bandwidth you could probably afford to allow bigger sized pictures, but maintain the picture file size limit.

This method is better than just having a text link to a picture because it gives viewers a sneak preview if they really want to see the full sized picture or not, unlike a text link.

This way every one wins, you get fast loading threads, you get bigger pics for those who want them, and you save bandwidth.

Well for a not easy hack you did very well.
    Thats fantansic.

At present all pictures say "xxxxx has attached this image"
It may be better to have it so that it says " click on image for enlarged view" That way any newbie will know that there is a better picture if they want to see it.

Yes rekd I have replied already. Thanks.

Paul there is a problem. While your script is thumbnailing well it is still reataining the file size.
If you right click properties on the thumbnail you will see that it is the same file size as the bigger picture. I notice that the photo gallery script acutually reduces the thumbnail file size. You may want to look at that script.

I see I will have to work on that one, that is a hard hack to incorporate into the forum. With a site this big and growing bandwidth is not the issue, the issue is the site loading fast. The bandwidth is the bandwidth, I'm more concerned with the pages loading fast.

I'm all for this, much better for those who exit their web browsers on slow downloads. This will help attract those people who steer clear of slow web pages, more members maybe??
