if nothing else we can start to share here. I am looking at medieval gun building and I have found mention of hardening the wood by burring it in cow excrement, I be leave its the ammonia that hardens the wood, dose anyone know anything about this.
Also I am looking at using a CNC to cut the wooden stocks for guns but looking at a solid piece anyone have any tips?

I think that a forum on firearm building would be great. I second the idea! There is a lot of stuff on that subject I would love to see and hear about. Good idea!

Its a good idea, but you also have to be careful of unlawful making of a firearm.

here is The National Firearm Act, Title 26 passed in 1937:

I agree.... Forum would be awesome.

As for the firearm act. Don't sell your scratch built guns, don't make anything that is full auto and don't build silencers.

That will cover most of the things that they will lock you under the jail for.

If you want to get into the business of selling guns, you'll need to delve into that that world. However there are alot of forums and posts that go into the legality of creating non serial numbered guns for your self and family heirlooms. Again, you need to seek some type of legal advise, if your concerned. As for gunsmithing, I don't know of any problems in that arena. Other than the requirements for ffl's to ship guns. But John Doe can bring you his gun for you to mill the receiver and add new set of sights.

As with all things, use some common sense.

This is the main reason that I got into machining.... well. Trying to get into machining.

    My machine keeps fighting back.

    This might help
    a) Firearm. -- The term "firearm" means (1) a shotgun having a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length; (2) a weapon made from a shotgun if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length; (3) a rifle having a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length; (4) a weapon made from a rifle if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length; (5) any other weapon, as defined in subsection (e); (6) a machinegun; (7) any silencer (as defined in section 921 of title 18, United States Code); and (8) a destructive device. The term "firearm" shall not include an antique firearm or any device (other than a machinegun or destructive device) which, although designed as a weapon, the Secretary finds by reason of the date of its manufacture, value, design, and other characteristics is primarily a collector's item and is not likely to be used as a weapon.

Straight from the link. The last couple of sentences might prove useful, if you are merely doing this as a hobby, which is what I would be doing.

Although I think most of the ones I made would wind up in this category:
    (h) Unserviceable firearm. -- The term "unserviceable firearm" means a firearm which is incapable of discharging a shot by means of an explosive and incapable of being readily restored to a firing condition.

Just a thought. I had an ex whose father restored older rifles, and also made some of his own. Every one he sold he filled out all the registration paperwork on, and went through all the legal BS. I know because I bought an original WWI Austrian .308 sniper rifle, and had to go through it all with him. I am not aware of that many problems with the process, I guess I will ask him. Of course, it might just be easier here, I'm from Texas.

Don't forget to read "subsection (e)" too

This could be the ringer that may cause problems.

Keep in mind that the Patriot Act has usurped a lot of formerly benign laws regarding weaponry.

Thankfully we've been castrated for years in the UK...we dont get to build things that go bang...Has the "Patriot" act made a difference to the right to bear arms or just the right to oppose the govt? either way the freedom of expression ie make observations upon ones findings could be more informatory

The Patriot Act has all sorts of insidious little devices in it for "protecting" us. And they were added by "anti big government/anti government intrusion Republicans".

Example: I had been moving my money that I had payed taxes on back and forth from savings to checking so as to keep a maximum average daily balance to gain max interest earning potential.

One day, I go to ATM and the account is FROZEN and I couldn't touch a dime in any accounts tied to that savings account. Upon asking the bank why (thank God the bank was open at the time), I got this "pursuant to the Patriot Act" crap.

It seem the federal government is now watching electronic funds transfers closely. Not who just how many. Anything THEY deem as "suspicious" (exceed so many transfers per month to/from saving) your account gets "looked at with higher scrutiny".

"Suspcicious numbers of transfers" (regardless of amount) are subject to federal freezes being applied to the account. No probably cause, no judicial oversight - simply exceed a number, BANG the account gets frozen.

I had to fill out a report that went to the feds about what I was doing with MY post tax dollars as I moved it from MY one account to MY other account in the same bank in the same city.

I simply closed my savings accounts after that because at 1.5% interest, I wasn't getting enough interest to justify allowing the feds to monitor my personal banking practices - which were 1000% TOTALLY LEGAL.

When somebody in ATF or Homeland Security decides to interpret the gun rules you cited the way THEY want and do what THEY want with your supposedly legal gun, there isn't a damh thing you can do about it.

Remember, it is YOUR interpretation of the gun law versus ATF's. Guess who has more power???? Ask our off shore friends who've had their gun privileges slowly usurped via well meaning but insidious gun laws as to what can happen.

Not that I subscribe to the "black hellicopter" theories out there but there are some real strange chinks being taken out of our "inalienable rights". Rest assured, BIG BROTHER is watching the internet - if they are already watching even piddly bank accounts for money movement, what do you think they can/will do for/to gunsmiths whenever they deem it appropriate do do so.
