Which way is the right way?

I am in the process of putting all the electronics together and have gotten the motors to turn but I'm still not sure on the connections of the motors to the controller. Obviously there are 4 wires that need to make 2 pairs, easy enough. And on the controller there are 4 terminals in two pairs, again easy. My question is, does it matter which terminals the wires go to as long as they are paired correctly? There are 4 different combinations that could be used and they all seem to make the motor turn. This can't really be right can it? How do I know which way is actually the right way?

What is important is the phase polarity of the pair with respect to the phase polarity of the other pair. For a 4 wire motor, there are two correct combinations, i.e. +/- and +/- or -/+ and -/+. One +/- and the other -/+ and vice a versa will show up running rougher.
