2 phase driver & 4 phase 6 wire stepper HELP!

My first post.
Hi all just have a question about phases.
I have a Mechatronics 4 axis driver board
and some 6 wire steppers.
The driver board handles Uni or Bi polar 4 to 8 wire steppers
My understanding was that all I had to do is not use the middle
wire of each coil. Fair enough.
Then I found out that my steppers are 4 phase. HUH?
My Question is that if I use these steppers as 4 wire then
does this change the phase??.
I don't understand the phase thing at all ,hence the question.
I opened up one motor to see if that would help me
figure it out but ended up more confused after seeing
it had 8 sets of windings.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

Please detail exactly which motors you have so that I can research them on the web for you.
Are you ok with an ohmmeter? can you post a sketch of how the field coils are connected?
Make sure that you measure between sides, that is to see if both are also connected to each other, which is possible.....add ohmage of each coil, either name (color) or number the connections in some manner....
