    what driver board

    Hey all,

i salvaged some astrosyn 23lm-k202 steppers(nema 23 size) from a old printer, i only have 2 but have sources a 3rd with the same spec. they are 4v/phase and 1.1a/phase. 1.8 deg/step... the table is built and is 20x24". after reading some threads here i see people run the motors at higher voltages and amps!!!I thought hat would blow them, shows how much i know!!!!! The router is for wood. am not too bothered about speed, accuracy is more important for my needs. its only for wood as well and mostly softwood/mdf/plywood. maybe some mahogany for a guitar or 2. Anyway any advice is much appreciated.

    Cheers in advance.

    rob.

You can't run them at a higher current, but you NEED to run them at higher voltages to get any speed out of them.

Depending on how much speed you need, you can probably supply up to 80V to those motors. But 24V would be an inexpensive starting point.

hey ger, really??? i have a 24 and 32v supplies, will hook up the 32v supply so, like i said. speed really dose not bother me too much. these are unipolar 2 if that makes any difference as to what board i use.

You can find your max voltage using 32 x sqrt of inductance. The printer moters may be a bit light duty for what you want to do, if so check out Keling steppers.

hey amp, checked out kelinginc.net. That looks like the better option for me as they supply everything i need. I might look in the uk though as i am in Ireland (shipping costs)but a kit seems the better option. Whats the best option as far as steppers go???as i stated in the first post the table is about 24x20" just for wood, and maybe hardwood now and again??????????? cheers for all the help

A nema 23 with 400 oz inches or so should be plenty, if you want more they have some nema 34's at 1000 oz in for $119 each. Automarion overstock has some nice rails and bearings rail cut to length and $36 bearings. Thomson rod and bearings are my second choice. Skate bearings belong on skates. Ebay ball screws or acme rod? I like ballscrews but both can be good. Do you want 24 x 20 actual cutting area? if so your table will be bigger. Haydn has a really nice woodworking router he did in steel and aluminum. I think it is one of the best machines on the forums. As you may have noticedfrom my posts I am a big fan of gecko drives. ( read all of Mariss' posts) He has a great tutorial for a 5 microstep build it yourself drive. Keeling has some nice power supplies. don't forget to check motor inductance usually bipolar parallel to get the drive voltage.

One of the Gecko G540 packages from Keling would be your best bet. Most performance for the buck.

hey all, thanks for the advice, yeah its a 24x20 cutting area. the table is built and ready to go. Its steel and mdf hybrid, v groove bearings running on the steel angle. No movement on any axis so i am chuffed. anyway i think i have picked a nice package from a supplier in England. thanks for all the help, i must post up a few photos when its complete.
