I'm trying educate myself on stepper motors. I understand the reasoning behind driving the motors at higher voltages than the rating. But doesn't that mean there has to be some current limiting circuitry to keep from frying the motor? On some driver boards, I see that circuitry but often not. Does that mean the driver maker expects it is being handled by the power supply? Example: on Ebay I see a set for sale with a power supply rated at 12V 10A, stepper motors rated at 5.3V 1A, the driver can handle 8-20V 10A. Won't too much current be delvered to the motors without some current limiting adjustment. Nothing is mentioned in the ad. |

Steve, You are 100 percent correct "There has to be some current limiting" The less expensive drivers use resistors to limit current. Be careful purchasing cheap eBay drivers, make sure you read the reviews on the Zone. Several forum members have been scamed. Also make sure you are looking at the correct driver for your motor a Unipolar driver will not work with a Bipolar stepper motor. A Bipolar drive with work with both Unipolar and Bipolar. Jeff... |
