If you head on over to www.geckodrive.com Mariss has some very useful tutorials on steppers which are fairly generic and is very good reading if you are new to the scene. People can tell you what wire to put where but it is no use if you don't understand WHY.
If you still can't work out the configuration then come back here and post again. I'm not being nasty, I'm just trying to get you up to speed without rehashing what has already been covered a thousand times here and it will make you feel a lot more comfortable with what you are doing.
I go back there from time to time to relearn a few things and it is a great resource that is readily available.
Here is the link.

Or just go to www.geckodrive.com and click on support and follow the links to a wealth of information. Mariss is probably the foremost guru on these things here in this forum and is also probably one of the most helpful. Not an easy combination when running a business like his.
Rich.

Mono makes some great suggestions.

I'll also recomend getting a breakout board, it will streamline (somewhat anyway) your connections and if you get one that's opto-isolated will also help protect your pc. There are several "start to finish" threads here you might look up a few of those as well.

What are you planning to build?

Hi again markraws
To cut steel you would need a router that is very stable and heavy..i.e a lot of mass. You need this to absorb the vibrations from cutting. A wood router really isn't up to the challenge of steel cutting and only the very best ones advertise themselves as being able to cut Aluminium. If you need to cut steel then try your hand at CNC'ing a cheap vertical milling machine. Don't get the round column ones as the Z axis alignment will be too hard to keep and you would have to modify it way too much. Try for a dovetail vertical slide. There are some cheap secondhand ones around.
Keep reading and throwing around questions and it will all come to you oneday. It's a fairly steep learning curve but this forum really helps to iron out a lot of questions from everyone. No one is versed in all things CNC but a few are well equipped to guide you on the right path to where you will get most of the info you need.
Also try the Yahoo forums for the CADCAMEDMDRO forum where a lot of the people here are also active.
I wish you well in your adventures. (and hope it doesn't cost too much :-) )
Rich.
