One axis (z-axis?) computer controlled testing device

Hey guys I have been lurking around on and off for a few years newer really had the time to get around building any machine.

Now I need to build a testing device form my PhD project. What I need is a controlled motion in one axis, the necessary movement is no more than 1-2" and I need two speeds. I'm going to do durability tests by repeatedly stretch and unstretch sealant rubber glues and do some stress tests on stucco.

My idea is to buy a machine vise and add a stepper or servo motor with necessary computer control, hence similar to a z-axis setup. Do you think this is a good idea or do you experienced guys have any pointers for me.

I need help with everything because I don't know where to start.

I'm relatively new to CNC, but I am an engineer.

I think you could get what you want with a simple stepper driver and maybe program up a Basic stamp to generate the pulses and the direction logic. You could probably dispense with the driver too but it sounds like you'll be needing a decent amount of force so you'll probably need a chopping driver. You could do the counting mechanically or with the PIC.

    Good Luck!

    Try http://www.zaber.com/

They have motion control products that use a USB port for the interface.

We used one for stretching silcone samples while mounted in a microscope.
