How hot should stepper motors get?

Hi. I have three 34HS series stepper motors for X Y Z from MotionKing with matching drivers, after running them for 10 minutes they are so hot you can not place your hand on them for more than 5 seconds. Is there a problem our do they run hot.

What current are the drivers set to?
What is the current rating of the motor in series and parallel?
Are you over curneting the motor?
What voltage are you feeding the drivers?
What drivers are they?

Some 8 wire motors actually list the current on the name plate as unipolar.
So if it says 4.2A on the nameplate it is actually 3A in series.

I asked one of our service guys and he said 212F(100C) is max.

If you can touch it for so long it probably is around 60C, IIRC most stepper datasheets quote around 80C max(or is that rise over ambient?)

I read about guys putting water jackets on their steppers to keep them cool!

The temperature of mine are directly proportional to the speed that they are working at. The slower the program, the hotter they get, to a point where I shut them down and let them cool. Faster programs (50-100ipm) they can run all day and are barely warm.

hot stepper motors

Third attempt at sending.
I too thought my motors were getting far too hot. Not that they are as big as most seem to use being but 60 oz motors 5Volt 1 Amp per coil arranged in Bipolar parallel but after a few minutes they got too hot to handle. My simple solution was to use a PC power supply fan on the end of each motor with a rectangular shroud that also carries the current limiting tresistors, Now the motors stay cool so perhaps I was being over cautious but no chance of melting the leads now.
John.

The motors are rated 2.7A 1.9 ohm phase resistance.wired in series.the driver current setting is set to 3A detail segment to 40 with angle 0.045 deg.The drivers need a power supply of 17v/1A AC and 60v/3A AC the transformers I have rate at 17v/2A and 60v/5A but when measured under load read 17.9v and 62.3v.the drivers are from motionking model:2H090MH and the motors 34HS9803

Cnc lathe

Hi guy, I have a cnc wood lathe project, and right know I have done all the mecanic stuff, I just need to buy the stepers motors and the drivers, but my main conser is the maybe I dont buy the correct step motor. I need some help, Im building something like this

As you can see the y axi have a saw as a cutter, so I have to put an electic motor on y axis, I guess the motor weight is around 25 lbs, so I need to now how many torque do I need for bout axis ( x, y)

Please advise I will apreciate

I had a similar concern. I am using three, "23-305-DS8A 305oz-in unipolar rating, 4.2v, 3A" motors from Hobby CNC.
When I was surfacing my table (25"x45") I noticed the x axis motor were getting quite warm, so I put a temp probe on it and after 12 minutes the motor was at 50'c and still climbing, I could only hold on to it for about 10 seconds. I realize that they say you could run them at 80 to 100'c but that is asking for trouble.
This I felt was no good for the longevity of the motor's life, so I installed a small "CPU fan", (about 2"x2") off an old computer I had salvaged some time ago. Well now the motor stays at about 8'c above ambient. I am going to install the same on the y and z axis as well.

Well worth the effort and price ha ha.

Cheers.....fatham

I do not use a heat sink for the dropping or forcing resistors either as I fitted them outside the motor cooling fan shroud. Gold anodised aluminium cases look nice against a black background. Obviously from that aspect chopper circuits would be better but some of us have to use low cost ways of doing things so resistors and coils in parallel are the way I had to go.
Of course if we win our lottery it will all change.
John.
