Stepper Driver and serial port

Before I get going here I should say that I am completely new to all of this..
Ok, I have not even touched the mechanical side of this project yet, its all hanging on getting my mototrs to work before I go any further..
I have built the attached driver from a 74LS86 / 74LS73 (Instead of the 74LS112) / ULN2003 darlington(im mostly putting part names in for searchability). At this point I have it all wired together with a power supply form a old computer (230 watts) and sitting on a breadboard.
My problem is that I cannot get the single motor on there to move right now.
As soon as I apply power the motor is in a locked state, I am not sure if it should be freewheeling or not (I dont think so) while the power is running into it.
I have tried different inputs from the serial cable (pin 2 to step, pin 3 to dir, 4 to dir, 5 to dir 6 to dir, and then every other possibility) and I can only get any movement out of the motor using Stepper Motor Controller from electronics-diy.com sending information to &H378.
Again, I am completely new to this..
I have read a little bit with people talking about serial controllers but I am unsure of that they do and if I have to have one or not.
If anyone out there could let me know about pinout from serial to x-dir and x-step, etc. that would be great!

Thanks,
Kyle

Buy me a Beer?

H378 is a parallel port address, not serial. And step and direction signals are typically sent through the parallel port, not serial.
