autopsy of a 8 wires nema 23 stepper motor

Hi,

This was the only 8 wires motor that I had. I have never been able to make it spin properly. Even yesterday, I had a transistor shorted while trying again.

The only thing that seem not normal on this motor, a 3,75V, 1A, 33.3Oz/in torque, is that is was spinning freely while turning the axle with the fingers. No resistance at all.

After dismanteling it, I found out that the rotor is not magnetised (not at all). I wonder if this is normal!

Anyways! The purpose of this post is mainly to show the inside of a 8 wires motor but any comments is welcome.

Alain

Fly a kite.

Lock rotor in correct position. Look at weather.
Fly Kite. Stand back (mythbusters style)
Wait for lighning strike.
Rotate a small amount.
Wait for next ligntning strike.
Will this work? Anyone?

That is normal for a variable reluctance motor.

CLICK HERE and read about two screens worth down the page.

At least that's my guess.

I thing that you got it. It must be a variable reluctance motor!

At 33 oz/in, It is a pretty weak motor for a size 23.

Hey Graham! You are so right. It's discusting! Hope there is no children reading!

Alain
