    Post Steper motor max. RPM

The steper motors I have max out at ~50 RPM before they skip (no load)
    They are 6.3v 2Amp 200 oz/in 1.8 deg.

I am building a small gantry router 24"x24" and this is not really fast
enough..... only 10 IPM with a 5 TPI direct drive screw.
I thought I could get a much higher RPM from these stepers.

Are there any engineering guidline charts for this sort of thing?

Can there be a problem with the L297/298 driver output signal?
Can a cleaner power supply help this much?
Is this just the limit of a 6.3V steper motor

What voltage are your running to the steppers, they are rated at 6.3v, but what I have read you can run them at 20~25 times that.

What voltage and current is your power supply?

    I'm using a 0-15v 30amp power supply.
The capacitor bank is ~45,000 uF
I have fed the stepers 8V this boosts the
speed & tourque some without overheating them.
Maybe I sould go up to 10, 12 > volts.

More than 10 or 12 volts, stick in 35 at least.

I agree, 35V at least (40 volt maximum) for L298. It all depends on the phase inductance / phase resistance (L/R) constant of your motor.

I'll run a bigger power supply on it this weekend and let you know what
happens. The motors are hooked up through the full winding
of each phase which is 8.5 ohms..... kind of low.

    Thanks for the advise.

If you know the inductance (in mH) the formula for optimum power supply voltage is 32 times square root of inductance.

For the normal operation L298 IC
the motor current is controled with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)
and the motor supply voltage has to be more than the rated motor voltage

I would of used a minimum motor supply of 20V
a voltage close to the maximum 46V gives a higher motor speed

I am not doubting you on this formula, but could you tell me where you find it? I've had discussions on other web sites about this but can't find a definitive proof of my belief in it. Thanks for your help.

Look at the gecko drive website in there faqs section. It will tell you all you need to know.
    Good luck.
