What kind is preferrable for a DIY cnc table?
(what's the difference?)

That is a Nema size 17 (1.7 inch) 23 (2.3 inch) and so on.
not seen a 28 before though.
Most people use 23 size, but that depends on the cnc machine you are making.

Corrected the title, it was ment to read "or 34" not "28"..
So, the NEMA numbers is its size, and has nothing to do with the function, or stepping or so...
