dc motors use?

Reading this forum makes me wonder about different style dc motors, so here goes. My question, what can a dc motor trolling motor be used for? Not sure the HP but about 15 lbs of thrust if that helps. I have about 4 trolling motors all about the same can they be used in any shape for or fashion as feed for a mill/lathe as a drive motor on cnc..? thanks for you thoughts...jammer

Probabally Trolling .

If you compare them, construction wise to what you have read here it should give you an idea, I would not imagine they are made up to Servo Grade.

Depends on the pole count on the armature.

Example: R/C car motors have 3 pole armatures and they make ungodly HP (for size) an turn astronomical RPM. However with 3 bar/pole commutators, they cog violently in the process. For an R/C car (or the weed wacker where the motors originally came from, no big deal). For a servo or something that needs smooth, cog free operation, hardly worth considering let alone using.

Imagine what a treadmill would be like with a 3 bar comm that violently cogs 6 pulses per rev - you could probably hardly walk let alone withstand the vibration.

This is why treadmills have high bar count (good for smoothness) but they are traditionally unidirectional in rotation (possible detraction for servo use).

Servo's need to start, stop and reverse direction - thus they are typically long in length but small in diameter (the lenght gives them the wherewithall to make power but the small OD gives them low inertia - absolutely critical for servo use due to start/stop/reversal issues.

What's it good for? Probably trolling and/or weed wacking.

Just because its a DC motor (considered for use for obvious reasons) that don't make it suitable for a servo.

If you are doing this as a DIY experiment, forget everything stated above - it can be turned into a rude/crude servo. If you're expecting true servo performance on the cheap, you'd better keep looking.....

Don't get your feelings hurt. You asked for info and not only got a true answer but a good explaination to go with it. Sorry you don't like the response but the info was accurate. You asked a good queston but from a technical standpoint it just wouldn't work. Keep slugging away and you will come up with a good design.

It is good to have you here and trust me, we are all here for each other. Ask as many questions as you need. We will help you build the machine you are thinking of.

Also remember that there are no dumb questions.......I was glat to see the question, and I read all the answers, thats how anybody that knows sutuff learned it, either by asking their own questions, or listening in when others asked or were "lectured" by those more in the know.

As to the trolling motor motors, what about using them for spindle motors ?? I know originally they were water cooled so heat may be an issue ??

Bill your answer got me to thinking ,heat may be a factor but i am sure the trolling motors have a lot of torque, i wonder if they can be used as a feed motor on my mill..may over heat, i do recall some have several speeds i would need to machine a housing to hold them and hook up to the table.a simple battery charger coupled to 12 v battery may make a less expensive drive ... your idea of a spindal motor has merit.. i need to see what the rpm is..as i said i have about 3 of these motors seems like we can use them for something other than their intended use.. thanks Bill!

I know some trolling motors are very smooth at low rpm in their original use, and some are even 24 volt.
