Looking to try and get more torque out of my machine I am using the Hobby CNC board with 3 amp 3 volt 200 step motor's at 38 volts, So here is my question If I get higher torque stepper's am I really doing anything if I use them with the board I have or just going around in circles and need to raise the voltage. Running 38 volts and changing to higher voltage will that change the amp draw at the same load. I know the volts x amps = watts and that is power for DC brushed or brushless motor's but do not know if the same holds true for stepper's. Milton |

| Want the same speed but at 1/4 steps, Right now set up for 1/2 steps and when try to run at 1/4 steps I get missed steps Right now running 38 volts, If I get a board let say will do 50 volts can I run the same stepper's and get more torque. Milton Last edited by Milton; 09-23-2006 at 06:34 PM. |

Try ger21's recommendation as well as the 1/16th step mode and see what the outcomes are. What software and how powerfull of a pc? What are your motors and machine? Size matters.

| I thought that the higher the steps the less torque you had. machine is 24 X 48 travel built out of 80-20 T Slot commercial ball bearing linear guides Hobby CNC board with 200 oz steppers at 36 volts Running Turbo CNC Computer 800 MHZ 6 Turn double treaded lead screws. Milton |

It depends on why and where you are losing steps. If you are missing them because of moving through a resonance band of the motor, microstepping will help. Do you have any binding in your mechanicals?

| There is no binding, I set up a file that runs the machune from corner to corner, Front to back and side to side, Will run it all day as fast as my screw drives will let it with out whipping with no skipping Just some G codes make it ship. Mostly G3 Milton |

| TurboCNC is known for having problems with arcs, Any chance you can try Mach2 or Mach3? If the 1/8 and 1/16 dpn't help.
