    Step-Syn Motors

I have a lot of step-syn motors from some equipment I work on and repair. I dont see alot of talk about 5phase motors here. Would these be bad for making a foam or wood cutting cnc machine?

You don't see people using them because the drives are expensive and hard to find.

You would definitely get beter resolution with the .72 degree step angle. I will agree with ger21 that they are expensive and hard to find. Since you work with them already, you have an advantage over the rest of us on getting the required parts. There was a small thread here regarding 5 phase motors but it did not get too far because 5 phase motors are few and far between.

I wouldn't get rid of them just yet. I have a feeling that they will just as common as the 2 and 4 phase ones are now. It takes time for the high tech stuff to filter down to the surplus market.
If it's not nailed down, it's mine.
If I can pry it loose, it's not nailed down.

    5 phase motors

well these are .45 deg and .75amp motors used for moving the robots fingers. I have the drivers and a drawing with all the wiring. I am new to this stuff and was getting a little worried that i didnt see much talk about them. I am looking at building a small foam cutter first. I will be using LM guides for the rails. I am thinking maybe 18" in x, 18" in y and 6" in z. I just alittle curious of how much torqe these things have in the real world. On the robots they are tuned down so that if they hit anything a current sensor on the driver stops the motor so they dont break anything.(well thats what suppose to happen anyway.

also there are more beefer motors on the arms that are 5phase and require a big driver box with 100acv to drive it. but the little finger ones just have a small very compact driver that requires 24dcv to run.
