    Torque vs apmerage of stepper

I have a practical cnc table with pacific scientific steppers. The motors are 280 in/oz @ 3.2 A 48v. My question is, Ca nI replace these with a different higher torque motor as long as it is a 3.2 A @ 48v motor?
The drives are IMS rated for 4A.

    Thanks for any help.

The 48 volt rating on your current motors is probably not the actual motor voltage, just a recommended supply voltage. It is probably about ten times the actual motor voltage. Most manufacturers give the actual motor voltage so you need the actual voltage to make sure you compare apples to apples. Do your current motors specify a coil resistance?

That said, yes you can replace them with different 3.2 amp motors. The motors should have a voltage rating under 5 volts. As a general rule, the maximum speed of the motors is proportional to the ratio of the supply voltage to the motor voltage. The supply voltage should be about 8 to 20 times the motor voltage for good performance.

Thank you for the info jeff,
I will look at the nameplate tonight. The motors are pacific scientific nema 23.
The drives are ims rated for 48v & the power supply is 150w 48v. Does that seem like too small of a power supply?

The Drivers sound like IM483 and these are rated to 2.8A RMS, so you will need to look for a motor with a current of 2.8A RMS and under in the wiring configuration you want to wire them in.
