If you only need to control one stepper motor you can use an Arduino Uno microcontroller , a Motor Shield for the Arduino and a simple stepper.

Hello everyone, I'm sorry to make an easy post but I am very new to the DIY. I was hoping to get some help with my design project. Our group needs to make an X-Table that moves in an oscillating motion at a low speed (like a linear slide). We were planning on utilizing a stepper motor to move a vice back and forth using a wormscrew. As I am new, I'm a bit worried we might have chosen the wrong path in solving this problem. If there are suggestions as to what kind of stepper motor to use as well as what microcontroller would suit the application and where to purchase, I would be more than greatful. We are on a budget as well and nothing is completely urgent but any help would be great. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much. I wasn't too sure in where to start but I now have a better idea of where to take this.
