    Question nema 34

hi folks, im using 2 nema 34 motors 6.5amps, they have very poor power output, i mean i could stop them with a pair of plyiers , im running them of mircostepper drivers 4.3amps output ,am powering the drivers with a 38 volt 12 amps power source.. should i use bigger drivers???

It sounds like the bottleneck is your drivers, which aren't putting out enough amperage for your motors. You don't mention voltage, but they could probably use more of that as well.

Some of the old stepper motors (pre "hybrid" motors) ie the round type often coloured blue or grey have quite low torques compared to the newer hybrid motors that have much improved magnetics etc.

Of course going from 4.3 amps to the rated 6.5 amps should help a lot and give you increased torque (approx 50% more torque) from the same motors, but if they are the old motor type you will probably get much bigger torque increases (and higher speeds) going to newer hybrid motors.

The motors are the newer square type ones i think they should take up to 60volts, the drivers are up to 50volt output. tis strange, i got a lend of i think its a nema23 stepper motor also the square type rated at 2.8amps and connected it up but could still stop it with the pliers that was running it with the driver board putting out 2.5amps at half current and switched it to full current at 4.3amps but still no better

What is the rated torque? You could stop most motors with a pliers if you grip hard enough.

It takes less than 5 lbs of force on 8" long pliers to stop a 600oz motor.

thanks guys, didnt think stepper motors would stop that easy,, but, but, but am now using the motor on a 16:1 ratio worm gearbox that was laying in the garage witch leaves the gantry moving top speed of 12 inchs per 4 seconds, not bad for the weak power output i have. Its amazing what a bit of ratio can do , am actually sitting on the gantry while its moving
