    NEMA 42 vs 34 12nm Steppers

    Hi All,
Im hoping someone could help, I have ordered a 1325 Router in which i want to cut and engrave Aluminium and wood etc.
They are supplying 12nm stepper motors for the Axis with drive by rack and pinion and linear guide. Initially they were Nema34(86BYG450-150) size but they have offered the larger frame Nema42 12nm(110BYG450A) in place of the 34's.

Is this a problem? Will it effect the performance, cutting speeds or accuracy of the router?
12nm is overkill but i want head room and was working on theory of more torque less strain. But i have read that the 42 are not as good as 34 with equivent torque due to speed issue.

    Thanks in advance

I guess it looks as though now one has a helpfull opinion in this section either?
What section should i generally post in this forum to get a reply or assistance?

Looks like i will just have to take the manufacturers choice and install the Nema42 110BYG450a steppers

    Thanks again for your help

Generally, with steppers, bigger is seldom better. As you mentioned, typically, the bigger the motor, the slower it spins. Larger motors also can have higher detent torque, and may not turn as smoothly at lower rpm.

    Hi Gerry,
    Thanks alot for the reply
So a 86 would be much better for finer Control and precision?
    Does having a 12nm 86mm have disadvantages over say a 8.5nm 86mm?

    Thanks Again

    Ok,
It seems the supplier is confident that the Nema42 stepper wont have any effect on performance accuracy, They have chosen the the 42 over the 34 as they had already order.
Checking the specs as it is the smaller of the 42's The motors the inductance and specs about the same between the 34 and 42.

I dont really have the knowledge i was hoping for so we will see how it goes

    Cheers
