Encoder or Resolver?

I have a small stepper motor with either a encoder or a resolver on the end, how do I know which one it is? It only has four wires comming out of it (Black, Red, White and green), All of my other encoders have 6-10 wires does that make this one a resolver? With the cover off It looks like a thin metal disk with 200-1000 thin slits in it, the led is mounted on top and would shine through the slits to some kind of pickup.

Thoughts??

Its sure to be an encoder, a resolver typically has 6 wires and also does not have a slotted disk, metal disks with slots are typically low resolution encoders, i.e. 500 counts/turn or less.
Black and red are probabally going to be common and +DC respectively and the white & green will be the single ended output, two channel, no index pulse.
