Vexta 5 Phase Motor Driver Question

Hi there.. I have a UDx5114N (Vexta 5 phase 1.4amp driver) and PK569auha 2.8 amp stepper motor. I was curious to find out if it will be a problem to drive the motor with this driver. I imagine I won't get the full potential out of the motor, but I am okay with that. Just wondering what and if damage may happen as a result. Any input would be really appreciated..

Thanks everyone..

Interesting to find this question posed, because I was just about to ask about 5-phase steppers myself. I just got two Oriental Motor .72 deg/step 5-phase stepping motors and I'm trying to figure out how to drive them. They have 5 wires. If I knew the stepping sequence, making a driver with a microcontroller shouldn't be too bad but it would take 10 discrete transistors because nobody makes 10-transistor darlington arrays.

hi powerfade,

by chance I found your inquiry. Therefore maybe late response.
Basically it will work well - no risk at all. Disadvantage: The available torque will be 50% (half current means half torque) at low speed. In case of higher speed the difference will be less. Soon or later (depending on power supply) you'll have nearly same torque.

You might try this driver....
Item # DS514-2, On-Board Type New Pentagon (Bipolar) Full/Half-step Driver (12 - 24 VDC) on Oriental Motor U.S.A. Corp.

They also have other drivers for 5 phase motors.

What type of steppers do you have? I have Vexta 5 phase PK564AUA 1.4A that I am looking for the best drivers to use. Just wondering what you came up with and if you have any advise.
