    Unhappy Stepper Motor fault ?

Hi I am bench testing a stepper motor driver and software set up for one axis of my new router machine build using mach3 and a laptop. The new motor nema 23 M60STH will not run and seems very difficult to turn by hand when dissconected from the set up, is this normal? I have built my own power supply 36 volts DC and tested this under load ok. I have checked all the configurarion to Mach3 pins etc and all the connections to the breakout board and driver MD542 for one axis (Y) still no movement of the spindle although the Mach3 counts axis movement ok.
As I am new to home made CNC electronics and I would appreciate any suggestions for step by step fault finding methods to eliminate any electonic or configuration problems so I can build in the other drives and test them under load conditions.Any help from the experts would be appreciated thanks.

If you have a scope, check for the proper signals on the wires. If not, try with a multimeter, and single step the driver while looking at the motor wires. Write up a table with one row for each step and see if you see the expected drive signals. If so, the motor is wired wrong or fried. If not, the driver is dead or not getting step signals.
