| There are no separate step and direction coils. The stepper motor contains a pair of coils that the stepper controller activates in turn. The step and direction signals are only of use to the stepper controller/driver.

| So interchanging the motor wirring from A+A-to B+B-on controller output is of no consequences. |

| The controller has two phase outputs A and B The motor has two (or four) coils (depending on how the sets of four are hooked up you end up with TWO equivalent coils) each end of one coil goes to each side of one phase and the other coil - other phase. The phases could more correctly labeled "A","Not A" and "B","Not B" So when one side of phase A is a positive voltage, the other side of phase A is "Not" positive. Think of it like multiplying by -1... (0 x -1 is still 0) so as the phases alternate you get a magnetic field reversal... Example half step... A = N-S , B = OFF A = N-S , B = N-S A = OFF , B = N-S A = S-N , B = N-S A = S-N , B = OFF A = S-N , B = S-N A = OFF , B = S-N A = N-S , B = S-N So changing the A phase to B phase will basically do nothing... just move the step over a bit in one direction or the other... But, Changing just one phases coil ends will reverse one magnetic field in the sequence which changes the direction the motor turns... |
