10 pound stepper?

I have eyeballed some steppers and the supplier says that they weigh 11 pounds each. They are Bi polar and that is all the info he has. Is this possible? Any ideas about what they could be?

Thats a big stepper motor. As for an idea, maybe in the vicinity of 1000 oz.in. of torque or better. I would have him do a more though check just to make sure.

well, i went ahead and bought them, for 50.00. Any ideas what these are?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ME:B:EOAB:US:6

They looked so nice, I hope I can use them, does the fact that they are Bipolar imply that these can be controlled with standard HW/SW? Or is it more complicated than that?

Buy me a Beer?

You might want to try calling them to find out more info. http://www.us.marposs.com/index.asp

Now we need to think outside the box. Check on the web for places that repair stepper motors. They may be able to tell you what the original motor's specs were.

Well, nobody has any info on these things, except Marposs, and so far the only thing I can get out of them is that they have one available, and if I buy it today, I can have it for only $3,338.00. What a deal, huh? So my next question to them was , OK, what is it I'm going to get for my $3500.00? Waiting for response.

Also, I would like to ask again, does the fact that it is a bipolar motor, with it looks like 6 leads mean anything? As far as being able to use it with standard CNC hardware and software anyway?

I found out that these are standard pac sci steppers, nema 42 frame , 1.9 degree, 8 lead, with US Digital encoders and around 2000 oz/in of torque, depending on how they are driven. Im waiting for a pac sci number. If I can get these things to work, I will be a very happy camper.

That is one heck of a motor at one great price. Any ideas on what you are going to use them on. If you can get an ohm reading across the windings then they are good to go.

Yeah, it looks like I did OK, I've got so many projects going on right now I'll use them either on a heavy duty gantry router I'm getting ready to start or on my RF-31 clone.

Update- The Marposs guy called and gave me the lowdown. There actually Pacific Scientific H series nema 34 4 stack standard hybrid steppers. He sent me a wiring diagram also. I loooked them up and they could be from 650oz/in to 900oz/in. Not bad for 25.00 each, considering they are brand new, never used with encoders. YES!!!!!

So I got these things, they are nice and very big, Now comes trying to get them to work. Connectors are 45.00 each, so I got to change the connectors, I'm not spending 180.00 on four connectors for two motors that cost 50.00, just out of principle. And a controller. Has anyone seen or used a Linstepper controller? They are on ebay for 32.00 each.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MakeTrack=true

Update: After spending an hour or two I figured out what Amphenol connectors these are an ordered two from Allied for less than 40.00.

Those Linistepper drives only handle 1.5A motors, and are really only good for smaller motors. I've heard they work great, though. To get decent performance from those, You'd probably need Gecko's at the minimum, or some high-end Ebay drives. Do you know the current and voltage ratings?
