2 stepper on 1 controller driver- power requirement
Hi
I know it's not standard, but will it be ok if : I used a 381oz 3.5a per phase stepper plug to a controller driver of 5.5a. Can I plug in parallel a smaller stepper like 280oz at 2amp ?
With those 2 motors it will took 5.5a, so being equal of the stepper driver power.
perhaps it might be better to used a bigger driver, like giving a 6amp.. But the 2 stepper will be used in a belt application at 3:1 ratio, like a Z axis, so i don't expect to top the load rating of the stepper and driver.
Re: 2 stepper on 1 controller driver- power requirement
Using 2 steppers of different current ratings in parallel wouldn't be advisable IMHO. My experience is limited to my own build, but with my stepper driver, it automatically limits the current so a *single* stepper doesn't receive too much current. With 2 steppers in parallel, I would think you have no way of ensuring the stepper with the smaller current value will not be driven by too much current? Depends on the individual stepper winding resistances. Maybe they are well balanced and would receive a proportionally correct current, you'd have to do the maths.
I'm sure there's others on here who know better than I though.
