Default Double shaft Stepper motors and hand wheels

I want to turn my axis manually with my machine on and Mach 3 on and when I do I can't turn my axis manually. Any ideas on how I can do this? Does it matter if my stepper motors are 4 wire or 8 wire?

    Thank you
    Nathan

It won't work when the machine is on, no matter what steppers you use. Turning a CNC machine on locks the motors, which exert their maximum torque when at a standstill. Instead of that, go to the MDI (Manual Data Input) screen, and type in the position you want the tool to move to. You'll use a command like this: G01X2.000Y1.567Z1.365F20 This will move the tool to the stated coordinates at a feedrate of 20 units per minute (which will be pretty slow if you're using mm). Eventually you'll forget all about how much you liked cranking...
